Decision Making

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 Posted by Bikram

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track.

The train is coming, and you are just beside the track interchange. You can make the train change its course to the disused track and save most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way?

What would you do....

UPDATE 1:- The question is to make a decision to change track or not change the track.. ?

Hint:- There is a Moral behind this .. So get those thinking hats on.. you have to decide ? No business of pull chain, shout, horn nothing ...

  1. Gaurav Says:

    Well, thats a difficult decision.

I would better pull the train's chain. As the train's speed is reduced, it will take time to reach the three children, and they will have ample time to run away.

  2. Bikram Says:

@Gaurav:- No you are not on the train.. you are far away and the only thing you can do is CHANGE or NOT CHANGE...

  3. Quest Says:

I would use my voice to warn the children to get off the tracks rather than change the train's course:D

  4. Bikram Says:

@Quest:- you reckon you can shout that HARD.. But ok lets see what others come up with .. I am sure it says you are near the track interchange :) Trains usually make a LOT of noise ..

  5. BK Chowla, Says:

1...Get children of the tracks to safety.
2 Make some one pull the chain.

  6. Unknown Says:

i would scream at the children to move off and run to the lone child and save him/her!

  7. Chatterbox Says:

Blow the horn of the train to seek attention, change the track to the disused one in hope that the lone kid would have heard the horn and ran off the track by now.

Waiting for the other replies :)

    Interesting question :D

  8. Bikram Says:

@chowla Sir:- the question here is PEople are in there bogeys, they cant see whats happening in front of the engine. And i am sure the engines make so much noise .. you voice will not be HEARD.

@Madhu:- M sure you cant fun that fast.. Screams wont be heard..

@ChatterBox:- Same replies to you too.. NO HORN.. Lets say its very foggy.. the driver cant see the kids oooh :)

  10. Neha Says:

if we do not change the track, we wil lose the lives of many; and if we change the tracks, one life will be any of the case, we are going to lose why not to minimize the loss?

change the tracks and save most!

  11. annucool15 Says:

is it possible to to run towards the single kid on the unused track, pull him out and then change the course to this track?

  12. annucool15 Says:

btw when u have the answer published, do let me know. i would put a link / post post abt this link to this on my mumbai local blog

  13. SG Says:

I would fall in front of the train. Then the train will hit me and stop. I will die. But the 4 kids will be saved.

  14. Kavita Saharia Says:

I will not change the track .Why to lead a train full of passengers to a DISUSED track ..i will risk many more lives .
a disused track (i think it is a track no longer in use or it is an abandoned track).

  15. Bikram Says:

@Neha:- hmmm good logic but . no wait .. lets see what more people say then I will write the moral or whatever i think... but yeah you have logic there :)

@Anuradha:- you can try that.. if you are QUICK :)

@Sg:- One body in front of a train wont stop .. you might end up giving ur life in VAIN..

@Kavita:- You are right on track there.. :) and really thinking logically..

  16. Sandhya Says:

I and my husband are thinking, thinking....! Waiting for the answer...!!!

  17. Bikram Says:

@Sandhya:- I have put what it up , it may not be the correct answer.. Cause no answer can be wrong.. its what one percieves and does according to the situation..

Trust you to ask such difficult questions ? God is great as they say in indian JAKO RAKHE SAIYAAN MAAR SAKE NA KOE..

whats got to happen will happen nothing we mortals can do ..

  20. Raj - Only name sake !! Says:

I will not change , I will let the train kill those 3 kids.
I am without mercy ,yeah may be but I dont want to harm a person who is following rules for all others who are not!
If its not 3 and 100 eventhen i would kill them all.
After all few hard and fast rules are made to follow , if you dont you are DEAD. so simple.

Jerrie Singh :- u cannot change anyones fate, whatever has to happen,it will bound to happen ------we can do our best to make sure minimum loss is i will change the track>may be train stops once it reaches the other track .............typical indian movie scene

  22. Anonymous Says:

Ravi Singh On puting my Safety and evacuation hat I would attempt to take the necessary measures to stop the train - and yes these days I am not suggesting with my bare hands, but to take a series of procedural steps to do that. If I am in a position to change tracks I assume I know those emergency steps and I won't have to devise new ones, but given the ... See Morepresence of mind I am sure it would be what I would do and if the children are in immediate vicinity then I would also simultaniously adress the effort to have them get away from either rail tracks -
(these kids must be from india commiting a mass bunk from school - also this is a rare scenario since there is no reason a group of children should be here - groups of children don't attempt such things anywhere else in the world )

  23. Anonymous Says:

This is a simple one.!!! No question of changing track and murdering the lone child on the disused track by catching him unawares and punishing him so cruelly for his playing it safe..!!! The children, in all likelihood, know the area and train arrival and consequences. They would leave track as some ONE ATLEAST surely would KNOW, HEAR, OR SEE.. ... See Moreand shout..!!! Also driver could HONK..!!! I would not change track, but just SHOUT and RUN towards children...!!!
Forget the numbers...!!! MY REASONING is CLEARLY based on the ODDS, LOGIC and ETHICS or MORALITY..!!!
    What say...????!!!!!
Just saw ur comment posted about 15 minutes ago. I was writing my comment just in time. Am glad I wrote before you could write ur reply. Am curious to see what is ur take on this..!!! Why dont u come online now..??!! :-)

  24. Mrs. Dimpy Nain Says:

Dimpy Nain tough decision this.....every life is equally precious...maybe i will try some alternate means of averting the disaster...though in an escapist sort of a way i dont mind believing that a miracle will happen aka hindi film style

  25. Vicky Walia Says:

will not change the track, how safe is the disused track cant compromise to safe few for many, unless its not a passenger train

  26. Bikram Says:

Nice ones Guys .. Very good comments , I am about to post the reply that i think or what it cud be .. No answer is wrong .. Its what we percieved or thought at that particular time :)
